The width of your blade is also important information when choosing the right blade. For us, we recommend that you choose the widest blade possible because it is stronger and can withstand greater pressure without flexing or being broken. If you are a woodturner, cutting bowl blanks with a bandsaw is effective and safe. However, you will need to choose the blade that has the right radius to cut the material.

Here’s a list of the minimum radius or curve for each blade width:

  • Blade width – Minimum radius

  • 13mm (1/2″) – 63mm (2 1/2″)

  • 10mm (3/8″) – 27mm (1 1/16″)

  • 6mm (1/4″) – 19mm (3/4″)

  • 5mm (3/16″) – 13mm (1/2″)

  • 3mm (1/8″) – 10mm (3/8″)


Tooth Form & Pitch

The third factor you should consider because this will depend on what type of work you intended to do for example, rip cutting, cross cutting, etc. Generally a skip blade is used for cutting, whereas a regular or triangular tooth blade is for cross cutting.

3TPI Blades

Used for deep cutting especially rip cuts.


4TPI Blades

Good for general purpose use with a degree of cutting across the grain and with the grain.

6TPI Blades

This is the ideal all-purpose blade suitable for cutting up to 160mm and ripping sections up to 50mm thick.

10TPI Blades

Good for cutting plywood and non-ferrous metals and plastic. The finish is good when cutting natural timber. When cutting metal, reduce the speed as much as possible especially when cutting ferrous metals or cast iron.
